R. C. Hawie began his racing career in 1970, running a green DeSilva runabout (which he still owns) in the C Stock Runabout class, at Lake Zoar in Connecticut. R. C. still owns the 30H Merc that he used in that race too. This photo is of R. C. in 1972 with his 44-D runabout.

George Howie - a Family Racing Tradition

R. C. comes from a family tradition and background in racing. His uncle, George Howie (yes, Howie not Hawie), raced automobiles at famous racetracks such as Indianapolis. This photo is of George Howie taken at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 1932. R.C.'s father, Richard "Dick" Hawie was also a boat racer in the 1950's. Dick Hawie raced 1950-1953 in B Utility 1 class in local CT races. R.C. still has in his collection the boat and motor his father raced.

R.C. currently races 500 Runabout in the US Title Series and various stock and modified runabout classes under the number 44-F. In 1982, when this photo was taken, R.C. was the Gerry Waldman Award winner and also APBA High Point Champion in C Stock Runabout. The previous year, in 1981, R. C. set a record in C Stock Runabout.

In 1994 R.C. took home 4 top awards - North American Champion in D Mod Runabout, APBA High Point Champ in D Mod, APBA Overall High Point (Mod), and APBA National High Point Champ in Formula E Runabout.

1995 was also an impressive year for R.C. Hawie in racing. He won the APBA National Championship in Formula E Runabout and set a new speed record in C Stock Runabout that year.

1996 - 2nd place Pro Outboard Nationals
|
In 1996, R.C. took 2nd place in the Pro Outboard Nationals in 500cc Runabout. He went on in 1997 to take the AOF C Runabout National Championship and in 1998 he set another speed record in AOF B Runabout.

2007 - 2nd place National Championship in 500cc Runabout

R.C. Hawie was 2000 AOF National Champion in B Runabout and 2001 AOF National Champion in B Runabout.

R.C. Hawie is also the Racing Historian for the Antique Outboard Motor Club. He has numerous files of information, magazines, brochures and other racing memorabilia that he has preserved over the years. His goal is to one day open a museum of outboard racing to share with the public.
