1960's - Mercury's Lake X
Lake X was the secret testing grounds for Kiekhaefer Mercury from the 1950's until the late 1980's. It was located in central Florida near the town of St. Cloud, and the lake's real name was Lake Conlin. The grounds surrounding the lake were fenced and the access road was gated with a guard on duty at all times. Lake X had a main building, a motel, an outboard shop, a warehouse and timing tower. O. F. Christner worked at Lake X for Mercury from 1969 until 1975. In the late 1980's Mercury discontinued testing at Lake X and the property was purchased by the Kirchman Corporation. Mr. Kirchman was the inventer of the ATM machine technology. He placed a new sign at the entrance, "Lake X Cattle Company."

1960's - Mercury Lake X, from the air
In 1957 Carl Kiekhaefer, founder of Mercury Marine, set an endurance record by running a Raveau boat with a Mercury motor non-stop for 50,000 miles over 68 days on Lake X. Many Mercury motors were subject to endurance testing at Lake X over the years.

1975 - Joe Michelini's Quincy Looper 6
This Joe Michelini 6 cylinder Quincy Looper is 66 cubic inches and was completely machined from billet aluminum at Quincy Welding in 1975. It is the last 6 cylinder Looper manufactured by Quincy Welding. There were over 600 hours of pain staking machining by hand on the cylinder assembly alone. The engine is unique because it has 9 carburetors, 3 in the conventional position feeding into the internal reed valves while each of the other 6 directly feeds into a piston port passage way for each cylinder. This is probably the 2nd most powerful Quincy Looper ever built. The only one with more power was the 90 ci Looper "Beast." This motor is still in existence, in a private collection in the northwestern United States.

1977 - 40 ci 8 Cylinder Yamato
This is a creation by Joe Michelini in 1977. He took 2 brand new 350 cc, 20 cubic inch B Yamatos and coupled them together to make an 8 cylinder engine. It was quite temperamental, but when sorted out it produced an exhilarating sound and performance to match. It is still in existence, in a private collection in the USA.
